Hugh’s ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Please join us for our dance party and potluck on September 12, 2014 at 9:00PM-10:30PM. Hugh will be doing the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge immediately following the party. Please stay, watch and participate in all the fun!

What is ALS?
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” is a progressive nerodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually lead to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.
ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is an activity involving dumping a bucket of ice water on someone’s head to promote awareness of the disease and encourage donations to research. The challenge dares nominated participants to be filmed having a bucket of ice water poured on their heads and challenging others to do the same. A common stipulation is that nominated people have 24 hours to comply or forfeit by way of a charitable financial donation. So far, this challenge has raised $62.5 million in donations!

Hugh's ALS Challenge Invitation

Hugh has been nominated to do the Ice Bucket Challenge and has asked if students would like to donate. For every $5 donated, your name will be put into a drawing for a chance to be one of the people who gets to dump a bucket of ice water over him. For a $20 donation, it is guaranteed that YOU WILL dump a bucket of ice water over him! All proceeds will be donated to ALS to assist in furthering their research towards a cure.

Please bring a towel (maybe one for Hugh as well), a change of appropriate clothing and shoes for this will involve a lot of ice and water. We would like to make this a potluck, so bring your favorite dish to share with everyone and we encourage you to bring cameras for picture taking as well in order to capture this great moment!
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask one of our staff!

Sincerely,
